I haven’t been to an absurd amount of coffee shops (yet) but Caffè in Gamba is going to be hard to beat. This place is awesome. Unlike most coffee shops that feel more rustic, Gamba feels luxurious and chic. It’s under new ownership and has recently been redone, it’s got plenty of room with tonnes of tables (and some couches) to sit at. They’ve got a decently sized terrace to enjoy during the summer as well.
Gamba does a great job of feeling like you’re at a friends house. The rich one. Everything is clean and inviting, and not at all pretentious, which can be a challenge with the decor they’ve chosen. The owner, Dominic, was extremely friendly and gave me some of his personal preferences to try when I ordered my espresso, which is made using an original 1960’s Faema E61 espresso machine that has been rebuilt to more modern standards. My first cup was from a local roster called Saint Henri, I tried their ‘Espresso Godshot’, an Ethiopian blend with hints of fruit and milk chocolate. Unlike drip coffee with a fruity taste (which I typically don’t enjoy), the espresso does a good job of blending the fruity taste with rich, full bodied flavour. The second roast I tried from Counter Culture was called Hologram – it was recommended to me by Dominic, and rightfully so. While still having notes of fruit and chocolate, it was thick and syrupy and had a great flavour, it felt more well-rounded than the Saint Henri, with a deeper flavour.
To eat, I tried their chocolate brownie, it was delicious and extremely rich – which I like. They serve a variety of desserts including croissants and cookies. They also have a fridge with some fresh sandwiches and paninis that looked great.
Honestly, I feel like Caffè in Gamba can do no wrong. It has a great mix of modern luxe while keeping the classical charm of an Italian Cafe. It boasts the largest selection of freshly roasted beans in Montrèal, they receive a new batch every week from five different roasters*! It doesn’t matter if you’re there to study, hang out, or bring a date, Gamba is sure to impress.
